The English winger believes the team boasts a wealth of attacking options, which allows them to dismantle opposing defenses effectively.
Gordon’s Impressions of Barcelona’s Tactical Flexibility
Since his arrival at Barcelona, Anthony Gordon has enjoyed his initial months in Spain immensely. He has been particularly impressed by the tactical flexibility instilled by head coach Hansi Flick in shaping the team’s gameplay. As the La Liga season commenced, Barcelona found themselves in superb form, sitting atop the league table with a total of 15 points from five victories. Their forthcoming matches against Racing Santander and Sevilla could be crucial in maintaining their momentum.
According to Gordon, maintaining focus is essential, even in light of their dominant performances thus far. He believes that the team’s mentality—particularly their refusal to become complacent—is one of the key factors contributing to their consistent results right from the start of the season.
Barcelona Adapts to Various Tactical Approaches
Gordon acknowledges Barcelona’s ability to confront various playing styles that opponents may bring forth. He points out that this tactical flexibility ensures they always have options for creating chances and finding the back of the net. The Englishman insists that their adaptability during matches poses a significant challenge for opposing teams trying to neutralize their attacking threats.
“I am genuinely happy here; we know what we are capable of. I think it will be very difficult for anyone to stop us from scoring,” states Gordon confidently. “The main strength of our team is our ability to discover solutions in any match situation. Therefore, regardless of what the opposition does, we can find a way through.”
Despite recent changes in squad composition due to the exits of influential players, Gordon asserts that newly recruited talents have infused the team with a fresh character. This enhanced depth and variety have made Barcelona’s offensive threat multi-faceted, allowing contributions from various players, including those in defense.
“I recognize that we’ve lost exceptional players like Ferran, Rashford, or Lewandowski, yet we’ve brought in talented replacements. Now we truly feel like a cohesive unit,” he reveals. Gordon continues by emphasizing the diverse characteristics of the current squad: “We now have different types of players. For instance, Fermin and Dani Olmo both play as number 10s, but they have contrasting styles. Lamine can operate in multiple roles, while Raphinha has a unique profile. The same applies to Karim and me. We also boast a range of central midfielders with distinct abilities, enabling us to break down any defense. Goals can originate from anywhere—Xavi Espart, our left-back, even scored recently. Having a team with such versatility is far more dangerous.”
Gordon did not entirely anticipate Barcelona’s level of sharpness at this stage. They always aim to win every match, but Gordon admits that the number of goals scored has exceeded his expectations. He attributes this impressive offensive output to the high intensity of training sessions at Barcelona. Practicing against top-tier players has made match situations feel comparatively easier.
“I aim for victory in every game, but I didn’t expect us to score five goals consistently, so I must say I didn’t foresee that,” acknowledges Gordon. “Training prepares you for match day. If you’re engaged in rigorous practice, the matches become much simpler as you’re up against the best, and the intensity is there. You have to defend, you have to attack. Everything you experience in the match is covered in training. When the match comes, the opposing team lacks players of that caliber.”
