Liverpool may have secured an important 1-0 victory at Bournemouth, but the performance of Florian Wirtz has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the Reds ahead of their next Premier League challenge.
Jamie Carragher believes the Germany international should not start against Manchester City after producing what the former Liverpool defender described as one of his poorest displays since arriving at Anfield. Carragher’s assessment has immediately raised questions about Wirtz’s role, his adaptation to English football and whether Andoni Iraola should make a significant selection decision when Liverpool return from the international break.
The victory at the Vitality Stadium was ultimately decided by Alexander Isak, who scored shortly before the hour mark following good work involving Cody Gakpo and Wirtz. Liverpool therefore collected three points and remained unbeaten in the Premier League after five matches.
However, the narrow victory did not completely hide the attacking problems Liverpool experienced, particularly during a difficult first half.
For Wirtz, the match represented another opportunity to demonstrate his importance to the team. Instead, his performance became the subject of intense scrutiny.
Carragher Questions Wirtz’s Place in the Team
Carragher did not hide his disappointment with Florian Wirtz’s performance.
Speaking after Liverpool’s victory, the former defender argued that Iraola has a decision to make regarding the midfielder’s place in the starting XI. Carragher said Wirtz would not be in his Liverpool team for the next match and questioned the German’s overall impact since his move to Anfield.
The criticism is significant because Wirtz arrived at Liverpool with enormous expectations.
The German playmaker had established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking midfielders during his time at Bayer Leverkusen. His technical ability, creativity and intelligence between the lines were central to his reputation.
Liverpool supporters therefore expected him to become a major attacking influence.
Instead, the beginning of his Liverpool career has been more complicated.
Carragher’s comments do not necessarily suggest that Wirtz lacks ability. Rather, they focus on his current contribution and whether the team is benefiting enough from his inclusion.
That distinction is important.
A player can possess outstanding individual qualities while still struggling to fit into a particular tactical structure.
A Difficult Afternoon at Bournemouth
Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth was far from a dominant performance.
The home side created problems during the opening stages, while Liverpool struggled to produce the attacking fluidity expected from a team with so much individual quality.
Wirtz was one of the players who found it particularly difficult to influence proceedings.
According to Sky Sports, his passing accuracy in the first half was only 63 per cent, the lowest figure among Liverpool players during that period.
Those numbers help explain why Carragher became frustrated.
Wirtz’s role is not simply to complete safe passes. Liverpool signed him because of his ability to create openings, connect midfield and attack, manipulate defensive structures and produce decisive moments.
Against Bournemouth, however, his influence was limited for long stretches.
Carragher described the first-half performance as offering very little and questioned whether players in similar positions elsewhere in the Premier League were currently providing more to their teams.
It was a particularly strong assessment of a player who is expected to become one of Liverpool’s principal creative forces.
The Positive Side of the Bournemouth Performance
Despite the criticism, there were reasons for Liverpool to be satisfied with the afternoon.
Most importantly, they won.
The match was decided in the 57th minute when Isak converted after Gakpo created the opportunity. Wirtz also had involvement in the build-up, with the ball taking a slight touch from him before reaching the Swedish striker.
Isak’s fourth Premier League goal of the season provided Liverpool with the breakthrough they needed.
The visitors then protected their advantage and secured a clean sheet.
That result was particularly useful because Liverpool had struggled to turn possession and attacking opportunities into goals in previous matches.
The performance was not spectacular, but it demonstrated another side of a title-challenging team’s personality: the ability to win when the football is not at its best.
For Iraola, that resilience will be valuable.
For Wirtz, however, the individual evaluation remains more complicated.
Why Wirtz’s Role Has Become a Tactical Question
One of the most interesting aspects of the debate is that Wirtz’s struggles cannot necessarily be separated from Liverpool’s tactical structure.
Attacking midfielders require certain conditions to perform at their best.
They need players moving around them, runners creating space, teammates offering passing options and enough possession in dangerous areas.

However, Carragher’s argument is that Liverpool cannot simply wait for Wirtz to rediscover his best form.
The team also has to win football matches now.
That is why the upcoming Manchester City fixture makes the selection debate particularly interesting.
Manchester City Provides a Different Test
Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture is against Manchester City on October 11 after the international break.
That match will provide a completely different challenge from the Bournemouth encounter.
Manchester City are likely to demand far more from Liverpool in possession, pressing and defensive transition.
There will be fewer opportunities for players to disappear from the game.
The speed of City’s midfield circulation can force opponents to defend for long periods, while their ability to press after losing possession can make mistakes particularly costly.
That is why Carragher believes Wirtz’s place in the team deserves serious consideration.
If the German is not influencing games consistently against lower-pressure opponents, Liverpool may need to consider whether another player can provide greater balance against an elite opponent.
That does not mean Wirtz’s Liverpool career is in danger.
It simply highlights the competitive nature of selection at a club with major ambitions.
Carragher’s Concern Goes Beyond One Match
Carragher’s criticism was not based solely on the Bournemouth performance.
He has also expressed concern about Wirtz’s broader impact since joining Liverpool.
The midfielder has faced considerable scrutiny following his high-profile transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Expectations were enormous from the moment he arrived.
Every quiet performance is therefore likely to receive greater attention than it would for an ordinary squad player.

He is being assessed on whether he can become a consistent match-winner and central figure in Liverpool’s attacking structure.
So far, the transition has not been completely smooth.
Carragher believes that is now a reason for Iraola to consider a temporary change.

Wirtz arrived with a reputation built in Germany and with expectations that he would immediately contribute at the highest level in England.
Liverpool supporters understandably want to see evidence that the investment can translate into performances.

Opponents also have extensive information about high-profile players.
A midfielder who dominated games in Germany may initially find that Premier League opponents close spaces more quickly and allow less time to turn with the ball.
Wirtz must therefore adjust.
The question is whether he should be given uninterrupted opportunities to do that as a starter or whether a period on the bench could allow him to regain confidence.
Carragher clearly favours the latter approach for the Manchester City match.
Iraola Has Already Shown a Willingness to Make Changes
Another factor in the debate is Iraola’s approach to selection.
The Liverpool manager has shown that reputations do not necessarily guarantee starting places.
Carragher has pointed to the willingness of the coaching staff to make difficult decisions involving major players as evidence that Wirtz could also be left out if the manager believes the team requires a different balance.
That could be important.
A modern squad cannot operate purely on reputation.
Players need to fit the tactical demands of individual matches.
A footballer can be one of the team’s most talented players and still find himself on the bench for a particular fixture.
If Iraola decides Wirtz should not start against City, that would not necessarily represent a long-term judgement on his ability.
It could simply be a tactical decision.
Wirtz Still Has Time to Respond
The international break provides Wirtz with an opportunity to reset.
Rather than viewing Carragher’s comments solely as criticism, the midfielder can use the attention as motivation.
His response will ultimately be determined on the pitch.
The most convincing answer would be a run of performances in which he influences matches consistently.
Goals and assists would obviously help, but his impact does not have to be measured solely through statistics.
Wirtz can demonstrate his value by receiving the ball under pressure, progressing attacks, creating chances, combining with Liverpool’s forwards and helping the team control possession in advanced areas.
Those details can change the perception surrounding a player very quickly.
Football criticism is often temporary.
One outstanding performance can completely alter the narrative.
Liverpool’s Attack Cannot Depend on One Player
Another reason this debate should not become entirely focused on Wirtz is that Liverpool’s attacking problems are collective.
The Bournemouth match was difficult for several Liverpool players during the opening half.
The team as a whole struggled to create consistent attacking momentum.
That means replacing Wirtz alone may not automatically solve the problem.
Liverpool need better movement from their forwards, quicker circulation in midfield and more reliable progression from defence into attack.
Gakpo’s contribution to the winning goal demonstrated the value of individual quality, while Isak’s finishing provided the decisive moment.
Those players also need to maintain consistency.
The best Liverpool performances will come when their attacking players complement one another rather than relying on isolated moments.
Isak’s Growing Importance
While Wirtz dominated the post-match debate, Isak continued to provide Liverpool with something they badly need: goals.
The Swedish striker’s finish against Bournemouth was his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
His ability to convert chances is particularly important because Liverpool have not always created a large number of opportunities during the opening matches.
Isak therefore gives Iraola a reliable attacking reference point.
The more consistently he scores, the more pressure can be taken away from creative players such as Wirtz.
That could eventually help the German midfielder as well.
If opponents become increasingly concerned about Isak’s movement, spaces could open for Wirtz to exploit.
