Lisandro Martinez has voiced his concerns about the management at Manchester United following the team’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid during the UEFA Champions League. The Argentine defender believes that the club needs to make more significant investments in order to build a squad capable of competing at the highest levels.

Manchester United’s Struggles Highlighted by Early Deficit

The match, held at the Metropolitano Stadium, saw Manchester United fall behind almost immediately, as Atletico’s Pablo Barrios found the net just one minute into the game. Matters worsened for the Red Devils when Leny Yoro received a straight red card in the second half for a foul on Jonathan David, leaving United with ten men. Atletico took full advantage of their numerical superiority, scoring a second goal through Ademola Lookman.

This defeat extends a difficult run for Manchester United, who have only managed two victories out of nine matches in all competitions so far. The pressure is escalating on manager Michael Carrick, who managed to lead United to a third-place finish in the Premier League last season.

In the wake of the loss, Martinez expressed his frustration, stating that the result reflects the current state of the club and questioned the support from upper management in enhancing the quality of the team. He emphasized that Manchester United needs to bring in additional players to compete effectively with rival clubs that are also strengthening their squads.

Need for Greater Investment and Accountability

Martinez’s disappointment was palpable as he assessed the performance of Manchester United against Atletico Madrid. He remarked, “It’s very bad, really bad. I have to hold back a lot, but sometimes situations like this reflect the current condition of our club. We had a fantastic season last year, and now we expect more from the club’s management, more players to compete because many other teams are also bringing in a lot of players. Atletico has an outstanding team, and they deserved to win today.”

The Argentine defender also called on the club to allocate greater investment towards strengthening the team and singled out technical director Jason Wilcox as someone who could help improve the squad’s quality. While Martinez criticized recruitment policies, he did not shy away from acknowledging the need for players to take responsibility for their performances on the field.

“I expect greater investment, 100 percent. I expect more from our technical director, Jason Wilcox. To be honest, as players, we also need to do more. However, when building a strong squad, it is crucial to ensure the team is ready for high-intensity matches like the one against Atletico,” he asserted.

When asked about specific areas that need strengthening, Martinez refrained from pinpointing a single position. He believes Manchester United has a foundation to build an exceptional team following the positive results from last season, but that development must continue. Martinez also expressed his disappointment in not witnessing enough effort from his team to achieve a commendable result during their visit to Atletico.

“Overall, last season we did everything and built a foundation to create an extraordinary team. This situation is frustrating and disappointing; coming here, I did not see my team striving for an impressive result,” Martinez concluded.
