Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, recently came forward to defend Viktor Gyokeres, who has come under fire for his lackluster performances in the attacking lineup. Despite concerns, Arteta firmly believes it’s just a matter of time before the forward finds the back of the net for the Gunners.
Gyokeres Under Scrutiny
Acquired from Sporting Lisbon at a hefty price, Gyokeres, who represents Sweden on the international stage, has faced intense scrutiny during his first season at Arsenal. Critics have focused on his underwhelming goal-scoring tally given his significant transfer fee. Following a disappointing start to the 2026/2027 season, Gyokeres has yet to register a single goal or assist in any competition. Naturally, this has led to renewed questions surrounding his capabilities as a striker.
In a recent press conference, Arteta offered his unwavering support for Gyokeres, asserting that the player has been performing well offensively despite the lack of goals. “It’s just part of a player’s journey, or a season, if you will,” Arteta stated. He elaborated that the striker has displayed several promising moments on the field but has simply been unlucky in front of goal. “On three or four occasions, he found himself in front of the net with an open goal, but the passes meant for him didn’t reach him,” Arteta explained.
The manager emphasized that had things gone differently, the narrative surrounding Gyokeres might have been significantly more positive. “The margins are very slim, and whether you score or not can change the whole discourse. We need to recognize the true impact he has on the team,” he continued.
Looking Ahead: Gyokeres’ Future at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta firmly asserts that Gyokeres remains an integral part of his plans for the squad moving forward. Praising the forward’s work ethic, he remains confident that it’s only a matter of time before Gyokeres starts finding the back of the net regularly for Arsenal. “Whether or not he is experiencing a crisis of confidence is a deeply personal question. What he has exhibited is remarkable willingness, determination, and an unyielding work ethic to push himself and assist the team,” Arteta remarked.
“This is Viktor every day, regardless of his position on the pitch or whether he scores. That is why he is always considered a viable option in our line-up,” Arteta concluded.
As Gyokeres strives to make his mark in the ongoing season, he approaches the upcoming weekend match against Nottingham Forest with a resolute determination to score, helping his team secure a victory away from home. Arsenal is eager to see their star forward break his scoring drought and hope that this weekend will be the turning point for Gyokeres and his campaign at the club.
